However, this hospital is the only health center for the tens of thousands of residents of the region. Adults, children and pregnant women attend the facility daily to receive the necessary care.
Lying on a bed, Mossa Ag Ibrahim, 23 years old, is suffering from a gunshot wound in the left arm. "I've been here for 48 hours and I cannot sleep because of the pain, the doctor is trying to get me evacuated to another facility because the operating room is not functional due to lack of electricity and skilled personnel," he says.
Nanna walt Alhamdou is a midwife in Kidal hospital. She says she has just received a 17 year-old girl with complications following the delivery. "The patient is in great danger if she does not receive an immediate surgery especially that her health does not allow her to be transferred to Gao and travel a distance of 350 kms," she laments.
For his part, the hospital's head doctor, Atta Ag Azouledj confirms the lack of some basic necessities such as electricity, basic equipment and trained personnel.
"Although the ICRC provided us with a power generator that is operational from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm and from 6.00 pm to midnight, we are still unable to work normally," he regrets.
He added: "when the power generator does not work, pharmaceuticals are exposed to heat".
In response to this situation, the Government of Mali has decided to send a delegation to the site to troubleshoot the central generator and restore electricity again in the Kidal region. In addition, they have to identify the needs in staff and medical equipment in the city's hospital.
The chairman of the health committee in Kidal, Touwa Ag Haballa states that he discussed with the teams from the power company on the total restoration of electricity throughout the city and rehabilitation of health center in Kidal.
Tiona Rothier Koné, the communication officer at Energy Du Mali (EDM-SA) said the company made its assessment and was currently trying to see how and when it could meet the needs of the population.
The absence of the Malian government from Kidal is due to the conflict between the Malian government and the coordination of movements of the Azawad (CMA) since 2012. The city is not only suffering from the lack of electricity but it also suffers from lack of water, education and all the basic services that were guaranteed by the state.
